Question: What force manifests as cruel, egoic states that want to harm others?
Hello Colleen – I have some questions, if you have time to give me some insights.
- I am Awareness – I get it – Adyashanti, to whom I listen regularly – makes what’s false vs what’s true – very clear and I can hear Awareness in his voice.
- Since we’re all Awareness, what force / intelligence manifests itself as cruel, egoic states that think nothing of harming other people?
- I remember your words – you will awaken by what challenges you the most – in my case it’s relationships. However, it’s one thing to be challenged and quite another to be purposefully broken by someone else. My work, income, the roof over my head, and my health have been severely affected.
- Does karma have a role in this, if so how?
- Adyashanti says he hopes we don’t have to be broken, as he was, to Awaken and added “only the tough headed ones like me have to be broken – I hope you don’t have to be.” Thank you and much love.
E: I am Awareness – I get it – Adyashanti, to whom I listen regularly – makes what’s false vs what’s true – very clear and I can hear Awareness in his voice.
Colleen-Joy: Pure awareness stands as the truth. Mind is a function that rises in and of awareness. Mind or thought is the dividing, judging, discerning, translating, commenting, labeling function in awareness.
Depending on how enlightened the apparently individual mind is, in other words, how closely representative of its source as pure awareness, this will determine how clearly the voice ‘sounds like Awareness’.
But we must also admit to the fact that every word uttered is conditioned by language and still cannot ultimately do justice to the unconditioned programs from which all words arise.
Many great teachers, including Adyashanti agree that silence is the clearest voice for truth. The purpose of teachings in whatever form they take, including nature, art, music and clear non-duality teachings, are to invite the mind to discover directly for itself what is being pointed to. It’s true self as awareness. Only the mind is enlightened or unenlightened.
E: Since we’re all Awareness, what force / intelligence manifests itself as cruel, egoic states that think nothing of harming other people?
To borrow from another great teacher Rupert Spira, I’m now going to be making a concession to what he calls the ‘separate self’. From the point of view of the separate self, there are many separate selves, which you refer to with “we’re all Awareness”.
From the view of Awareness, which has no fixed “point of view”, which I call 360-degree freedom and true seeing, there are no separate selves, only apparent movements in awareness. Some movements are enlightened and others are unenlightened. Light and dark. Harmonious with life or against life. Following dharma (Sanskrit for the moral and physical laws of life) and adharma (against the laws, evil, immoral).
Either a movement or aspect of mind is radiant with the knowledge of the self as awareness or shrouded by the cloud of ignorance – a distortion of love.
In a body there can be cancerous cells living right next to healthy cells. Cancer cells are adharma – against the health and harmony of the body.
Healthy cells are following dharma, being true to their nature and contributing to the health of the whole. Mind also has “cells”, or “programs” appearing in the apparent individual mind, some of which can be reflective of truth and dharma, others can be ‘cruel, egoic and think of nothing else but harming others’. This is also how ‘humanity’ manifests.
Cancer cells lie in potential in every body, and with enough toxins, stress and imbalance, they grow. In humanity, genetics, ancestral burdens, the pollution in the river of genetic life manifest as evil, distorted minds that cloud truth.
The force that veils and hides the self from the self has many names. Ignorance and the Sanskrit word “maya” are two words for this. For there to be a universe appearing in and of awareness, ignorance has a role and is necessary.
Maya is a face of god, a force that sustains the appearance of a universe.
For there to be a surface mind ignorance has to be at play. For there to be atoms, ignorance has to be at work. A mind is needed to gather the knowledge of life. A mind is needed to see trees, to experience a body and to know itself. Very importantly, awareness doesn’t need a mind to know itself. It is self-evident and so obvious that it is easily dismissed or overlooked.
So mind is that which is needed for the universe to know itself. Within mind there is the possibility of ignorance or enlightenment and various degrees in-between. All the while, awareness is never enlightened or ignorant, it just is whole, complete, peace, love and pure existence.
To borrow from Rupert Spira again, with his helpful metaphor of the self-aware screen. Imagine a self-aware screen. In and of the screen a movie is playing with characters. The screen is never touched or harmed by even harmful villainous characters.
Linking this to what I am suggesting now, some of the characters are radiant where the mind that makes them possible is enlightened and so the characters more closely embody the nature of the screen which is love, peace and joy. Other characters might have degrees of this, but some may appear as the very opposite of the nature of awareness, cruel, egoic, evil.
I remember your words – you will awaken by what challenges you the most – in my case it’s relationships. However, it’s one thing to be challenged and quite another to be purposefully broken by someone else. My work, income, the roof over my head, and my health have been severely affected.
I don’t recall saying those words, but yes there is often a place for suffering. It brings the mind to its knees and can invite the search for enlightenment. As Thich Nhat Hanh teaches, “Suffering is the mud for your lotus”.
My heart is with you E, there is no denying that life can be such a severely painful experience. I’m yet to meet anyone who hasn’t felt broken in some way by life. All I can tell you, is that there is great sanctuary in the truth, in the direct perception and deepest knowing of awareness, because here you see that you are unharmed, untouched and free of even the most painful of pains.
“Downloading” this true seeing and truth steadily over time into the body-mind is like medicine for the body-mind. In this way all programs of mind are steadily enlightened. This is ongoing. Though as awareness nothing has touched you, the self-aware screen is unharmed by the movie of life.
Does karma have a role in this, if so how?
The ‘characters on the screen to use Ruperts metaphor again, or the songs of life, or the waves of the unmoving ocean – many metaphors for the apparent movement of life in and of awareness.
These movements and characters are subject to and bound by the laws of life. The red pixels on the screen must obey the laws of being red. They are limited in that way.
The word karma in Sankrit simplistically means “action”. So all movement/action is karmic.
When movement follows dharma or follows adharma then it reaps the corresponding fruit. The characters in the self-aware screen are bound by the rules of the movie of life. The soul is evolving and growing and learning through karma and its fruits.
Eventually when a sou,l-mind is ripe the possibility of self-knowledge and enlightenment arises. The soul-mind can become enlightened, can realise itself as made of and in awareness.
This knowledge can be embodied in the body-mind, so that the body-mind-soul all sing the truth and reflect the wholeness, peace and love of awareness. Even when a mind is enlightened, the body and soul still might be subject to the prior motion of their karma.
To quote Adya, he talks beautifully about suffering with dignity. Adya daily faces his own health challenges despite being a clear voice for awareness. Many great saints and sages who were pure voices of truth, where still subject to their destinies and the body’s death.
Enlightening the body-mind with truth can really help to ease and end the suffering by bringing peace to the body-mind.
Adyashanti says he hopes we don’t have to be broken, as he was, to Awaken and added “only the tough headed ones like me have to be broken – I hope you don’t have to be.”
I understand E. My body-mind also was brought to its knees to many times, so stubborn it was. Practice resting attention and the mind in the sanctuary of you as pure awareness. Gently correct and train the mind to change its habits of labeling things incorrectly.
May the truth give your body-mind-soul strength, sanctuary and peace. May grace, the intelligence that runs the dance of life free you from this difficult destiny Either by changing the life story, or by freeing your heart and mind to walk in peace in the story of it.
